Chapter thirty-eight
The Landing
Suddenly the swaying slowed down again. The treacherous waves no longer frightened me, and I shook my fur to dry it. The yacht slowed down to go around some rocks. We saw a few pelicans in flight and smelled rotten fish.
âWeâre already through the roughest passage, where the dark water from the east collides with the turquoise water from the west,â Cedric said.
âAs Greta has done us the favor, weâve already received the spiritsâ permission to pass through,â said Victor jokingly.
What?
I didnât understand that at all. Fortunately, Hilde came to my aid, saying, âGreta recited the famous expression from Danteâs Divine Comedy. Danteâs guide on the voyage to the afterlife, Virgil spoke it to calm the infernal spirits protesting the passage of the two visitors in the boat.â
Land was no longer visible on the horizon. The pelicans weâd seen had now returned with others who were huddled on the high rocks. Others preferred to make their way to the overhanging ridge of a shipwreck. A cold breeze arose unexpectedly.
âIs that the shipwreck weâre looking for?â asked Emma, and without waiting for an answer she took out her phone to take a picture of it.
âNo, dear,â Hilde replied. âThat looks like a much more modern ship than one used in the sixteenth or seventeenth century.â
âThatâs definitely not it,â said Cedric. âMy dear friends. Here we are. To proceed youâll have to go down into the water. But from now on the depth will only be up to your knees, I assure you, and the water is calm. Simon will take care of unloading what we need. If you look to your right, youâll see a building that weâll be using as an operations center.â
Only up to our knees? What are you talking about? My knees are only . . . do I even have knees? Doesnât anyone take my height into consideration?
âDonât worry, dear Honorio, bon ami,â Cedric reassured me. âSimon, who is an excellent swimmer, will carry you to the shore in his arms.â
How about my purple carrier? It probably floats!
It was the first time I thought it had been a very bad idea to go on a treasure hunt on that lost island.
